Curriculum Information

The Statutory Framework for the Early Years Foundation Stage (EYFS) 2021 covers children from birth to age five. This document states:

 

Every child deserves the best possible start in life and the support that enables them to fulfil their potential. Children develop quickly in the early years and a child’s experiences between birth and age five have a major impact on their future life chances. A secure, safe and happy childhood is important in its own right. Good parenting and high quality early learning together provide the foundation children need to make the most of their abilities and talents as they grow up.

 

The overarching principals of the EYFS are:

Unique Child  + Positive Relationships + Enabling Environments = Learning & Development

 

We acknowledge that every child is unique and enjoys, learns and develops in a variety of ways at different rates.  Children thrive with positive, warm and loving relationships. The Indoor and Outdoor environments and resources are key factors in children’s enjoyment, learning and development.  When all of these factors work together, children make progress whilst having fun and enjoying coming to school.

 

There are seven areas of learning and development. The three prime areas are: Communication and Language, Personal, Social and Emotional Development, Physical Development. The four specific areas are: Literacy, Mathematics, Understanding the World, Expressive Arts and Design. 

 

We also teach Religious Education following the scheme of work provided by the Archdiocese of Birmingham. 

 

Phonics is taught following the Read, Write Inc programme, which focuses on teaching each sound individually, learning to blend sounds together to read, and segment sounds in words to spell. There is more information regarding Read, Write Inc in the link below and a meeting for parents of Reception children will be held in the Autumn term. 

 

We teach Mathematics using the Power Maths programme, which teaches the mastery approach. This means that each element is taught through small steps, using Concrete, Pictorial and Abstract resources and materials.
