Lent Term

Year 2's Spring Term Vehicle will be 'Where will you explore?'. Children will be learning about the places they can go and the things they can be. They will also be learning about famous explorers and places that have been explored through the Year 2 curriculum.

Lent Term Curriculum Overview

Descriptive writing

Today, we started our character description unit in English. We started by looking at pictures of the characters from ‘Shrek’ and wrote some things about then that we could use later in our writing. We worked well with our partners and on our tables to do this task, collaborative learning is very useful to us as it helps us share ideas! 📝

Science experiment to test heart rate changes

Today, we did a science experiment, where we measured our heart rate to see how it changed after different types of exercise. We talked about why your heart rate changes and we noticed that the more you exercise, the faster your heart rate gets to pump more blood (and oxygen) around your body. We were exhausted 5 different types of exercise!🥱😴

We made our prototype pivots today in DT. We are learning how to use pivots to make a moving monster. We had great fun making the holes, putting the split pins in and adding some decoration to our linkages 🔗✂️

Topic assembly

We held our topic assembly today for the school and some special visitors! We absolutely smashed talking about our art learning from last term, we really showed off how much we knew about Van Gogh. Miss Evans is very proud! 🖼️🖍️🎨

Balanced diets and the eatwell plate

Today, we made our own eatwell plates to show what a balanced diet is and why it is important. We learnt all about the different food groups and what they do, and then talked about what foods we eat and decided whether or not we are already eating a balanced diet.

RE lesson - the journey to Egypt

Today, we learnt about the story of the journey to Egypt following Jesus’ birth. We learnt that Joseph was visited by an angel who told him to take Mary and Jesus to Egypt to keep them safe from King Herod. E had great fun acting this story out!

How do we change as we get older?

Today in science, we investigated how we change as we grow. We started by talking about all of the things we can do now that we couldn’t do when we were younger like ride a bike, talk, write and read. Then, we investigated if as we got older, our feet got bigger. We found that this is not always true! Some of our feet were bigger than our friends’ who were older than us and Ms Mair’s feet were smaller than Miss Evans’! This means that sometimes your feet get bigger as you get older, but this is not always the case.

Practicing our balances!

In PE, we have been perfecting our stances to support our balances. We have really enjoyed showing off our new skills and Miss Evans and Mrs Ashby have loved watching us progress!

Germs everywhere!

Today, we used glitter to show how easily germs can be shared between us. We then wrote some information down to tell people why, when and how we wash our hands. We were pretty grossed out! 🦠

Anointing of the sick

Today in RE, we learnt about the use of oil for the anointing of the sick. This comes after we learnt about how Jesus’ miracles healed the sick. We were amazed to know that priests and bishops are able to try and heal people who are sick too. Miss Evans gave us some oil and a piece of paper. On the paper, we had to write our names, then we had to dab some oil on the paper and look at how it changed. We found that the oil had absorbed into the paper like the oil absorbed into the sick people it was used to anoint. After that, we wrote some prayers in our RE books and some on pieces of card to take down to Church for Father Bob to use during prayer services.

Today, we used our new school iPads to create digital art. Our focus artist, David Hockney, has made his most recent artwork using an iPad to create pop art, so we thought we’d give it a go! Once we’d got over the excitement of using iPads, we got to work and made some beautiful pieces!

World Thinking Day 2024

Every year, on the 22nd of February, Girlguiding and Scouting members celebrate World Thinking Day to commemorate the birthdays of their founders - Lord and Lady Baden-Powell. Our class has Brownies, Rainbows and Beavers. Miss Evans was so proud to see all of the children sporting their uniforms and badges so smartly, well done!

DT - Hidden sugar in drinks!!

Today in DT, we started our healthy eating topic. We recapped our learning from science about healthy eating and the eat-well plate and then learnt where sugar comes from. We then taste tested some different drinks and wrote some predictions about whether or not they had sugar in them… We tried flavoured water, apple and mango juice, blackcurrant squash and Diet Coke. We were very shocked to find out that all of them apart from the Diet Coke had sugar in!

Parent workshop - Editing our writing

We loved welcoming our parents in today to see our wonderful non-chronological reports. We had written, edited and published our writing and invited parents in to help us publish! We made some lovely informative posters about Ibn Battuta. A big thank you to all grown ups that came, especially with the mix up of dates - we appreciate your support!

Lent Class Liturgy

We held a Lent Class Liturgy today. We said some prayers for this who are less fortunate and promised to walk alongside them on our Lenten journey as some of us have given up certain foods or treats for 40 days. We were very lucky to welcome Father Bob and Mrs Evans in to have a look at what we were doing, they were very impressed with our reverence and thoughtfulness when making our prayer hands and thinking about who to pray for.

Data handling in computing!

Today in computing, we kickstarted our data handling unit by learning about pictograms. We talked about how it was easier and more convenient to make them on a computer as otherwise, we would spend lots of time drawing or sticking in our pictures. We then had a go at making our own digital pictograms after conducting some class research. Questions we asked were ‘What is your favourite colour?, ‘How did you get to school?’ And, ‘What is your favourite animal?’

PSHE - Democracy and Tolerance

In PSHE, we have been thinking about opinions and whether it’s okay that we don’t all think the same about things. We talked about democracy and having our own voice to share these opinions. We then talked about what tolerance was and why we should be accepting of all people’s opinions even if we think theirs is wrong. Some of these questions caused some heated debate within class this afternoon!

News Reports

Today, we used our History and Geography learning to write and present some news reports all about Captain Scott and Roald Amundsen’s expeditions to the South Pole. We talked about the dangers and difficulties and the reasons why Amundsen won the race there.
