Advent Term
Year 2's Advent Term Vehicle
Each term, children will be working on a vehicle, which will support their learning in class. This term, Year 2's vehicle is...
'How can we keep safe?'
Children will be thinking about things that are safe and unsafe and how to respond to hazards and unsafe scenarios. They will be thinking about things such as water safety, fire safety, emotional wellbeing and railway safety. All of these things are important in our local area as we are located by railway lines, bodies of water and the Advent Term will bring lots of fire (Halloween and pumpkins and Bonfire night and fireworks). It is important that children learn to identify risks and hazards and feel equipped to deal with them appropriately and safely.
We look forward to sharing our learning with you!
Advent Term Overview
Our Reading for Pleasure Book
Using place value grids in maths 🧮
Today, the children consolidated their learning about place value in maths. They used base 10 to represent tens and ones in two-digit numbers and partitioned these numbers into tens and ones. The children got to grips with the place value grids super quick! Well done Year 2!
Observational drawing in art 🌻
Year 2 enjoyed their art lesson today, developing their observational drawing skills. They had to look closely at the sunflowers on their table, think about size and proportion and then sketch their sunflowers. They then added colour using a choice of media. 🌻🌻
Look at the concentration on their faces! 🤩
Place value of punctuation and grammar - English 📝
Today, the children worked more on understanding the makeup of sentences. They now know how to find the verb and subject of a sentence and can now identify which clause ‘leftovers’ belong to. Have a look at their hard work labelling the parts of a sentence in order to identify where the full stops and capital letters go. ✏️
Taste testing food in DT 🍴
Today, the children taste tested some food to see what they might want to include in their wraps at the end of our DT unit. They had mixed reviews of the fruits and veg, but most children enjoyed the cheese!
Sorting materials in science
Today, we enjoyed sorting materials out based on whether they were man-made or natural materials. We found it tricky at first because the objects were mostly man-made so this confused some of us. However, in the end, we successfully sorted a range of objects and were able to justify where we had out them and came up for definitions of natural and man-made materials.
Team building activities
We had so much fun today in our team building games. We were working together in our house teams to win games and points. We learnt a lot about communication, turn taking and working together to be successful. We were having that much fun, Miss Evans forgot to take photos!
World Mental Health Day - Learn with Me Session
2 had a lovely time today in their 'Learn with Me' session.
Their grown ups were invited to attend and PSHE session about World Mental Health day.
The children completed lots of activities about themselves; what they liked about themselves, what made them happy and what was important to them. They also completed some mindful colouring which encouraged some conversations between them and their parents.
Thank you to all of the grown ups that came, we really appreciate your support.
DT - Making Healthy Wraps
Year 2 had a fantastic time today making their healthy wraps in DT. They have been learning all about balanced diets, the food groups and what makes something healthy. They designed their wraps last week, based off a design brief and their wraps had to include at least one item of diary, fruit or vegetable and some protein. The children used knives to chop their ingredients up and learned to use both the bridge and the claw cutting technique. They then had to wrap their wraps up in tin foil and took them home to enjoy!
Learning to pray the Rosary
Today, we learnt more about the Rosary which is a special prayer to remember the life of Jesus and Mary. Our RE unit has been 'Sharing in the Life of Jesus', so we have been thinking about the relationship he has with others. We learnt what the different beads mean, what they represent and why we pray the Rosary as well as what the different decades and mysteries are. We then had a go at praying the Rosary.
