Whole class Reading

At St Anne's, we use Whole Class Reading lessons to teach children a range reading skills. We predominantly use The Teach Hub resources to support us with our teaching of these skills to ensure our children have a sequenced and progressive journey of reading all the way through the school.

Year 3 - Isaiah - "I like guided reading because it helps me to learn different stories and read more at home.

Harper - "Guided reading helps me to learn tricky words that I can use in my English lessons."

Year 4 - Edith - "I like guided reading because I love reading anyway, but if we read a good book in guided reading, I ask Dad to buy them for me, so I can read them at home."

Brodhi - "Guided reading is fun, I enjoy it."

Year 5 - Norah - "I enjoy guided reading because I like reading everything!"

Top tips for reading at home!

Book Worms... What are they?

As a school, we encourage all children to read with an adult for at least 10 minutes daily. This may be a phonics book, a reading scheme book or a reading for pleasure book.

Did you know that reading with your child for just 10 minutes daily boosts vocabulary, comprehension, and confidence? Research shows children who enjoy reading perform better academically and develop stronger emotional wellbeing. Shared reading also nurtures curiosity and imagination—key ingredients for lifelong learning. A small habit with a big impact!

Your child will bring home a red book worm stuck into their reading diary which will contain 25 circles. After each day of reading, simply sign, date, and colour one circle (please only do this once a day). When completed, your child earns a red badge and moves on to the next colour. Complete the rainbow to earn the special book worm badge!

Once you have read with your child, please also record this in their reading diary with a short comment. This may be regarding their enjoyment of this particular book, any words they struggled with, or whether they were able to ask and answer questions about the story.
