Reading
Children in Year 6 are expected to read to home for at least 15 minutes per day, this should be recorded in their reading records. Studies have shown that independent reading for just 15 minutes a day can expose students to more than a million words of text in a year!
A member of staff will read with the children individually at least once a fortnight, in addition to group reading activities. Children will have the opportunity to change their own reading book each day, if necessary. Parents should ensure that children can not only read the text but have a good understanding of what they are reading before changing their book. Reading records will be checked weekly to ensure children are reading at home. Please speak with the class teacher if you feel your child's reading book level is not appropriate or if you have any questions.
Children are encouraged to read as a writer and explore how the author has structured the story, developed and used vocabulary, created characters and atmosphere, created dialogue between the characters and to identify ways in which they have hooked you/the reader into the story. Exploring stories through this persepctive will help children to develop their own writing.
